I used to keep mine on the sand and away from all other rocks. It'll overtake any area you put it on and smother other corals out.

It really doesn't need a ton of light so the sandbed is usually good in most tanks, unless you have dimmer lighting.

Do they do well on back of the tank wall?

Yes, it will grow up on the wall and do well. It doesn't need much light, I have some growing in my sump that is lit just 4 hours a day from a home depot LED bulb,

If you do grow it on rocks be very careful because it spreads fast and is very hard to remove once it does. I've tried kalkpaste and even scrubbed it off with a metal brush and can get 100% off.
