It could be physical damage to the gill cover from shipping/handling or fighting with other fish, if this is the case it could live a long time with the condition. It also could be something is irritating the gill like a parasite as Gig'em mentioned which would need immediate attention to keep it from spreading to other fish. Putting it in a QT to at least observe it would be a good idea if it's easy to catch. (As a side note I've also seen fish keep one gill cover closed for some reason and only breath through the other side gill.) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
