jolt
I'm using a BRS cannister filter filled with the bituminous carbon at the end of my external air line. Credit Reburn for the concept
Reburn
The flow being more consistent is good but the only concern I have is long term calcification on the pump from the effluent getting mixed in a fairly small volume of water. Probably just me over thinking it though. Jolt, On the air line filter version 2 I am going to be using a double filter, one 1 micron sediment and then bituminous carbon. Overkill, probably so, but I have a plethora of can filters around.
Dan H
Every other month I take the entire skimmer apart, including the pump. It will be interesting to see if there is any build-up on the pump next month. It is a sealed DC pump so I'm not sure the calcification would have much effect on it. For the air filtration, I just bought a respirator canister filter. Figure it's designed for air filtration in nasty environments, so it should do alright. mbaxter
I ran an airline outside last week also. My PH immediately went from 7.95 to 8.11 within 5 minutes. I was thinking about a short piece of PVC with and end cap on top and a coupler in the bottom with a piece of polyester fill stuffed in the bottom as a filter. 3/4 inch sch 40 about 3-4" long would be plenty. Then pop the cap off and drop some new carbon in there periodically.
mbaxter
Dug through my plumbing bucket and found the Durso's that came with my tank...Im using Herbie's. Glued the cap from one to the bottom of the other, Then stuffed a piece of pump prefilter in the Street El. Ill leave the top cap unglued and put a 1/4 barb o nthe top for the airline and hang the whole thing from a hook where the airline exits my house. Every few months Ill pull the cap, dump the carbon and refill.
Dan H
That's not a bad idea. I'll take pictures once I get my filter set up later this week.
mbaxter
Heres what I ended up using: 3/8 compression to 1" Elbow, 6" of 1" Sch 40 1" coupling Pump filter - from my old Mag Zip tie I drilled a couple holes in the coupling and put a zip tie through it to keep the filter from falling out. Then I filled it about halfway with ROX .8 carbon and stuck it on the hose.
Isaac
I really gotta stop looking at this thread, as if i didnt have enough ideas *lol* Sump in the garage kinda helps, its not very sealed, side effect is.. its in the garage, blah. Reburn
Just so you know rox 0.8 is very inefficient at filtering air. It's better then nothing. But bituminous is the industry go to for air filtering.
mbaxter
Good to know! Thanks. I was wondering about that.
Dan H
Looks like the Acro-fairy stopped by and dropped off 2 new babies. Thank you very much Just Reef! If you're looking for some nice stuff at a good price, you should probably pay Aaron and his crew a visit. I'll take some better pictures once they color up a little... Just a tease for now.

Dan H
They are really healthy too! Just need a little time to get used to the new water then chop chop!
FarmerTy
Oh man. I don't typically travel south, but I may have to go out of my way to check this shop out. Those look nice! Those should be straight from delivery I'd imagine. Aaron hasn't setup a system for acros yet and honestly, that's probably a good idea with a new system like that. Dan H
Correct. I believe he's planning to get a SPS setup going soon so I'm looking forward to that. But I'd imagine if your looking for a nice colony he can get something for you in the meantime.
Gig 'em @ NDstructible
I'd prefer to get them straight from delivery anyway. Less of a chance of them picking something up in the festering waters of a LFS display tank.

Dan H
Meg and I went to our favorite restaurant (11 plates if you're interested) and had a bit too much wine, then came home and made a super exciting night by fragging up the remaining mariculture colony! Then we completely cleaned out the refugium as it was growing too much hair algae. Plus we're contemplating converting it into a second frag section. I stayed up way past my adult bedtime. Nothing beats a night of drinking, fragging, and messing around with the tank. Yes, we are that nerdy and boring. Results:
FarmerTy
Man, so all I need to turn you guys into frag swap elves is a couple bottles of wine? I'll have two next weekend for you guys! I got the SaoSa frag swap coming up! I'll have the cleanest frags in town!
Dan H
If you need frag-elves a bottle of wine or 2 and I'm sure we can help. Italian reds only. We really enjoy fragging up stuff. It's fun and you get to make a bunch of corals that will be spread all over the place. Ok, brace yourselves. I went a bit macro happy today...

Dan H
Thanks! Thought this would be kinda cool to show how much SPS actually grows... For the Strawberry Shortcake, the left is on 6-28-15, right is 10-10-15, middle was today 12-13-15 Miyagi Blue Tortuorsa - left is 6-28-15, middle is 10-10-15, right is 12-13-
Dan H
Even better... This is from just after getting the Tort on 5-22, and today. I tried to scale them to be the same size so it's fairly apples to apples.
