JoelATX
Hi all, For sometime I've been planning to stain my new stand to match my kitchen cabinets, which are in the same great room. I have extra cabinet doors, and I've been trying to match the stain. But I'm not having much luck. See the picture with the 3 planks, middle is the cabinets, left stain is a total fail, right is as close as I've come. BUT, there is still part of me that wants a dark stain. See the picture of a stand I made several years back. A dark stain would match the stairs right next to the tank. Is matching the kitchen cabinets really a good idea? Do tanks have better pop when they are dark? Which looks better to you?
diabeetus
from recent projects that I have done, and comparing some other stands I have had, I think dark looks really sharp. scroll to the bottom of the first page http://www.austinreefclub.com/topic/28683-40g-beetus-build/
diabeetus
matching is a good idea if its in the right area. if not, maybe try an accent
+KimP
I'd go dark since its right near the stairs. But do whatever you like the look of best, it doesn't all need to be the same shade to look nice.
JoelATX
If I was at a LFS, and was told to pick a stand, it would be anything other than light wood tone. I also want the tank tied more to the living room than the kitchen. The more I thought about it the more my minds eye saw dark under the tank. AND I have plenty of dark stain left from my stairs.
JoelATX
I've got it all stained... to bad it wont be warm enough for polyurethane for days. Maybe Saturday. I'm not really happy with the Poplar grain, I never use it for stained project again. Sorry for the crappy cell phone picture.
