bigmike015
Is this cyno algae? I did a water change last week and still came back. How do I get rid of this?
jestep
Definitely cyano. You make any equipment or lighting changes, fish additions, change your topoff water source, overfeed, or run out of GFO or something similar recently? What lighting do you run as well? bigmike015
I don't use any gfo, I have led lighting, I have slowed down on feeding, no light or equipment changes. Tanks is about 8 months old.
JamesL
Generally decreasing nutrients and increasing flow in the regions affected by cyno will help.
bigmike015
I have 2 power heads across from each other in the tank, one small one and I bigger one ( maybe a 500gph) should I put a bigger one in there?
bigmike015
The 2 smaller ones where in there just put the bigger rio in there
jestep
Do you run biopellets or do any carbon dosing or know what your NO3 and PO4 levels are?
bigmike015
Don't know what either of those are, I'm new! Lol, NO3-0 and don't have anything to test phosphate.
jestep
No problem. Just ruling out some obvious ones. I would probably chock it up to excessive nutrients and possibly not enough flow. It might be a good idea to have someone test the PO4 on a good test kit or a hanna meter. Limiting feeding and keeping up on water changes will probably get rid of it. Not sure what your feeding schedule is, but I would probably cut down to 2 moderate feedings per week.
bigmike015
Wow, ok I will do a water change and feed less, right how I am feeding a small pinch 2 times daily
victoly
Phosphate is usually a bigger contributor to Nuisance algae in reef tanks than nitrate in my experience. Get a test kit, I personally like the Hannah, and let us know. I'd guess you're above 0.10, which isn't terrible, but you see those algae breakouts really reduce when you can get to 0.05 mg/l
victoly
And yeah, 2 per day is why you have some algae, I only feed 1-2 times per week also.
bigmike015
Ok, we'll I will definitely cut back on feeding!
offroadodge
i feed 2 square cubes of mysis and krill, and one cube of blood worms every night. flake flood is generally not a great food but works.
bigmike015
I think I'm just going to start feeding 4 times a week. I will stray away from the flakes also. What is a good frozen to feed fish, I have misis shrimp, and brine shrimp. Fish consist of 1-flame angel 3-yellow tail damsels 1- clown 1-4 stripe damsel 1-chromis 1-goby 1-coral banded 2-emerald crabs 20-crabs/snails 4-turbo snails
