aggieMEDIC
So this is a strange question but bear with me. Recently my wife has become allergic to something in our city water. Our fridge filters whatever it is out so that water isnt the problem. Its the tap water that is causing the problem. It started christmas and has gotten progressively worse each time. Bad enough that we are in the ER tonight. I know we all use rodi for our tanks but does anyone do any testing on the water before the filtration? Any recommendations on where to get water tested to see whats in it then we can know what the allergist should test for. I see dead people. Then I bring them back to life. victoly
I'm in the environmental business (water specifically). I know several labs around town, and after your doctors figure out whats up, shoot me a PM and we can brainstorm what the next step might be. Include JeeperTy as well, we're in the same line of work. jestep
Definitely interested in the outcome of this. Fridge filters are pretty weak, at least compared to RO/DI, so I would imagine it's not something big like bacteria or a parasite or a compound that can be removed with carbon? victoly
Carbon doesn't remove anything biotic and leaves most metals untouched.
+brian.srock
Let us know because the first thing that came to mind is this flu pandemic we're having.
aggieMEDIC
The flu gets ruled out because it is isolated incidents presenting with signs/symptoms of an allergic reaction. Itching, wheezing, rash, hives. These all improve with benadryl, albuterol, epinephrine, and steroids. She has been given an epi pen in the mean time. We are looking for an allergist today. My thoughts are. I need to test the water and see what exactly is in the water then test the water filtered through our fridge and see what the differences are. Then have the allergist test for the things found in the tap water but missing from the filtered water. Only then can we narrow it down to what the actual problem is. The wrench in the whole thing is the allergy doesnt happen when taking a shower or brushing her teeth, only when the water is ingested. Thoughts? I see dead people. Then I bring them back to life. victoly
What is your water source?
aggieMEDIC
City of austin. They are already testing our water but I dont expect them to find anything. I see dead people. Then I bring them back to life.
victoly
Are they testing where your water comes in to the house or from your faucet?
aggieMEDIC
Outside faucet. I wasnt able to be home when they came by. I see dead people. Then I bring them back to life.
victoly
Unless it's picking up something from the piping that goes to your kitchen, that should be a pretty good indicator if it's something common. When they give you the analytical data, shoot me a copy and I can interpret if you'd like. I could also potentially pick out other things they may not have tested for and point you towards a lab that I trust.
aggieMEDIC
The reason we think its the water is because its happened in multiple places. First my station (city building) water with ice we cant remember the second Third was at chili's ordered dr pepper instead of water. 4th was tea from chic-fil-a with ice (they told us it was filtered) The water/ice is the only common denominator. So its not just at the house. Oh btw wife says thanks for all the help. I see dead people. Then I bring them back to life.
+brian.srock
We don't drink straight from the tab and instead get our water from the RO/DI. If you already have one for your tank then you can just get this add on for it. http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/brs-add-on-faucet-kit.html
jestep
Make sure you're not drinking water after it's gone through the DI unit.

There are so many things that it could be that I fear that you'll just be blowing money by getting the water tested. Even with my discount, youd be looking at probably $200 in analytical fees. I think your best bet is to see that allergist and see what they have to say. Is it possible that it's something in your car?
JamesL
If you need an allergist recommendation, I can recommend mine. Dr. Roger Harden (512) 338-1366 They have two offices, one north and one south. I go to the south austin office for monthly allergy shots. That address is: 4207 James Casey St. (Across from the hospital) Suite 306 Austin, TX Their website has the north information also: http://www.myaustinallergist.com
