Entropy
I just noticed last night if I slide my mag float across the glass back and forth at a constant rate I can create a nice 1 inch wave across my tank. Now I just need to figure out a way to keep it going without my arm getting tired.

Radney711
haha my tank is too small because if I do that too fast I create an earthquake for my corals
ckyuv
What happens when a snail gets on the glass lol
victoly
This is why people have children, to complete tasks like this. Right?
DerrickH
yeah but kids dont grasp the concept that substrate and mag floats are a bad combo...

barderer
Hmm, this actually is not the worst idea I have heard. You could make a device that sits on the outside of the glass and moves a mag float like(with a weaker magnet) back and forth across the glass using gearing and a track with a simple motor. Plus side is all the junk would be outside the tank instead of inside. I just tested this on my 30 gal cube and I only had to move the mag float 6in back and forth 6" to get a very nice wave. FarmerTy
I'd think I'd get a little distracted with a mag float moving back and forth on my back glass wall... lol!

JamesL
Next thing we know it people will be putting the feet of this in the tank to generate waves:

bige
Maybe you could take an oscillating fan motor and put a paddle on it. Look up DIY oscillating power head. Same idea. Edited August 8, 2012 by bige
