Will
Im sure the answer to this question is no or not likely, but would any type of sps be able to survive and do well in 16gal tank with 96 watts of PC on it? The sand is 16" from the bulb
Stephen
I wouldn't do it.
pbnj
Maybe some Montipora.
DaJMasta
I've heard of people keeping monti caps and arcos under PC, but the growth is fairly poor and the colors are just as bad (all brown for the most part). I personally wouldn't do it because I don't think they'd be healthy and they wouldn't be as resilient because of that.
Crab Rangoon
In my experience, SPS do not hold their color, or color up to their potential when kept under any amount of PC lighting. Typically, the bulbs and their reflectors are to blame, as PC reflectors are usually pretty bad in design, and as most reside within a manufactured housing, there isn't a lot of room for improvement. T5's or a combo of T5 and VHO would produce better results, if you were wanting to avoid MH or LED lighting.
+KeeperOfTheZoo
I don't see why you couldn't try some of the easier sps. That comes out to 6wpg. That's an admittedly flawed measurement system but its something to work from. I have just over 3wpg of PC lighting in my tank and have two sps colonies growing very well. One is some sort of branching digi that really extends its polyps well and glows under actinics. The other is ORA Miami orchid that has grown from.nothing but the broken off base of the original colony. Its color is very pretty and its starting to branch now. I thought it wouldn't be possible to keep sps with PC lighting and I know the real high light species would fail. I'm doing real good with anything in the moderate light range. Will
Keeper of the Zoo, Any small frags you want to bring tomorrow? thinks for the advice everyone, I have asked this question long ago and got the same answer (eventually had this same tank under a 175W mh). +KeeperOfTheZoo
Not yet Will. I'm waiting on the Miami orchid to get some big branches then ill frag it but Stephen who gave it to me gets first dibs. Its pretty, and I'm not much of an sps fan. reefman
Will, At least this hobby doesn't leave you with a hang over in the morning. KeeperofTheZoo, Thanks for remembering Stephen Edited April 17, 2010 by reefman
stoneroller
I'll bring some Monti digitt for you to try out (along with the Favia). I've had success with montis as well.
Timfish
I'd say it depends to a degree on the species you're getting. Staghorn, Acropora cervicornis, and Porites porites can be found to depths of 160 feet. I've seen a green and purple plating monti and a green acro doing well under T5s and I have a green Lettuce, Mirulina sp. I think, that's gone from a tiny 1/4 x 1/2 inch frag to 2 colonies 2 x 3 inches in 5 years, not the greatest growth rate I know but it's in a partially shaded end under T5s. Timfish
. . . a green Lettuce, Mirulina sp. I think, . . . My bad, should have said Povona sp.. Anyway I checked and it's getting about 2500 lux under T5's. Same tank has a piece of red plating monti that's getting about 3500 lux. I would expect more than that from your PC's.
