Salt Dreams
Let the tank run its course, I had the same problem it will eventually subside. The algae on the sand well I still have that problem and a product called silicate clear was recommended to me for diatom algae thats the nasty looking sand algae. Toxiq Reef
Never experienced it before on a new tank on a cycle..quite odd, thanks
Robb in Austin
Phosphate issue(old live rock leaching)? Lack of flow? If it's only 1 week in though, let it ride. Leave the lights off if there is nothing else in there, or at least cut back on the photo period. Is this your first SW tank? Only reason I ask this is because it sounds just like a normal cycle issue and FW cycles are different.
DaJMasta
Yep sounds like diatoms. As far as I know they're pretty typical in a cycle and should subside on their own. CUC members and pods both eat them, so one way or another they'll go away. I've actually heard that small diatom blooms during the life of the tank are good because they replenish the pod population. pbnj
Diatoms...perfectly normal. Just don't rush the cycling. It will eventually run out of nutrients and starve-off.
Toxiq Reef
I have absoloutly nothing as a cuc except the occasional pod floating around visibly, just the skimmer ATM, was waiting for about another week for hermits and snails, 2 koralia(sp?) 2's and the return water is def kickin around
Brooks
Happens to most new tanks. All of my water and sand came from my tank and the LR came from a very well established tank and I still got a cycle. :\
Toxiq Reef
So silicate pads a good idea? Or 0 lights on this cycle
Robb in Austin
I'd just leave the lights off, and skip any chemical methods.

Robb in Austin
Wait a few more weeks.
prof
Patience, and no chemicals. It will be better in the long run. Small consistent water changes also help.
Crab Rangoon
I suggest most people leave the tank alone, and even look at it as little as possible for the first 10-12 days - the more you look at it, the less patient you get, and the dirtier you accuse the tank of being Having light algae like this coat your glass is pretty much to be expected within the first couple weeks of starting up, and another one or two rounds of algae will sweep the tank over within the next weeks to month - especially if using lights over the tank before the initial cycle has kicked. But remember, just because you don't have any negative results when testing your water does NOT mean you are not experiencing / have already experienced a full cycle. It'll all be cleaner soon, and just be sure not to jump the gun on adding any clean-up crew, we'd hate for you to experience an ammonia spike from critter loss.
