Gah! Algae problems!

Okay, so in my new tank, I've noticed a film that build up on the glass literally every 30 minutes. Does anyone know what this is, and how I can get rid of it?

I'd try to snag some pictures, but I doubt that'd be very easy to do. :S

Hey John,

How is your algae battle going?

I think I'm winning mine!!!! :)

The cyano is pretty much gone (couple tiny patches that are getting smaller each day) and the derbesia is thinning out. No hair algae in site, gets eaten faster than it can grow!

I'm exhausting phosphate media at a pretty good rate still, but I went two weeks between water changes and the algae is still on the decline instead of taking over with a vengeance like it used if I didn't do at least a once a week water change.

Our situations have/had a lot of similarities so I'm curious to see how things go for you, keep updating! Did you reduce your CC?

Liz

With the new skimmer and phosphate reactor using GFO, the hair algae started dying. The cyano was still going strong. I did "three days of darkness" but I added a little twist. I shrouded the tank with dark beach towels. I did not cover the top. The eliminated almost all ambient light from household lights and windows. When I removed the towels, my tank was darn near pristine. I have a couple of small patches that seem to almost die off overnight and then come back. I am thinking of doing one more TDOD next week and I might have it licked, at least for this go-round.

Thanks for asking. Have you tried the "three days of darness"?
