Come to think of it, the only times I've had coral lighten up on me is if under/over exposed to light, Mg overdose, or nutrients were too low.

That lower Mg has me concerned but that's all I can think of. Didn't accidentally leave the light on overnight by accident?

I've used baking soda in the past with no issues in a pinch. Just look up online on the dosage. Unless you have a huge uptake, I think you'll be fine until morning.

I'd say most don't use check valves at the end of the day in a saltwater setup. They are deemed unreliable and will fail eventually. I think your new plan sounds about right.
