  1. That was my first though too when I saw these... I can't imagine trying to do a water change on an aquarium hanging from the ceiling!
  2. Very nice! I really like the superman monti.
  3. Wow. Simply Wow. I just skimmed through your end-of-year update and the tank looks fantastic! Great job! I am not a big SPS fan, but looking at your tank could change my mind B)
  4. Ditto on the emerald crabs, they have always worked for me in getting rid of bubble algae.
  5. Just curious ... what type of conch is it?
  6. You're right, I should have put that in my description, as I have seen that also. Mine is happy one again. I have been trying to find a new location in the tank, and the past few have not been to it's liking. It is about time for me to manually frag my leather, as it is shading too much rock (or get a bigger tank ).
  7. Hmm.. I don't think I understand fully (pictures might help if possible). I have a toadstool that is about 1.5 years old, and it continues to grow in diameter. I think I have heard that that toadstools can regenerate from pieces (I know the crown can, not sure about the base), so maybe you will get a new toadstool from the detached base. And if you are getting tentacles to come out of the other portion, than it seems to be somehwat happen. When mine is not happy, it does not extend it's tentacles.

    New to Austin

Welcome! Glad StarFire found another Nano-Reefer to pull over to this site
  9. Congrats!! Very cute. I have never seen a min-pin of that color.

    Refractometer

Not a stupid question ... I was a die hard Hydrometer fan before... Besides being temperature independent, they are ultra-easy to use. No fussing with bubbles on the swing arm. Few drops of water on the lens, close the cover, and look through the view-hole and you can see your reading.
  11. Cute picture ... but man, that tanks looks super clean! This is what my tank looked like when I went the SeaHare route:
  12. *whistles* Very nice looking tank, and great pictures!
  13. Ok, it has been ages since I have updated here ... mostly because interest in the tank swings from really interested to just keeping it going. Recent additions have been 3 new yellow clown gobies from RCA. Lost one not too long ago for no apparent reason, other than he was pretty small and stuck against the overflow grating. The other two seem to be doing fine. I did a minor re-scaping the other night. My toadstool has just gotten huge and have been trying to find a spot for him. I had moved it to near the bottom for the past few weeks, but it was not happy at all... no polyp extension. So I think I found a spot it likes, up closer to the light. I am starting to see little nubs of polyps about to sprout up. I also moved my ricordias up off the sand, and they seem much, much happier. You must excuse some of the pictures. Seems my photo taking skills got rusty, thus some are a but blurry or dark. Click on any of the below pictures for el-grande versions. "Jr." sitting on his favorite coral. Hi-fin goby with "snap" the pistol shrimp. That shrimp is probably the oldest moving creature alive in this tank. Got him pretty early on. Happy ricordias. The full tank shot. Please ignore the algae near the bottom... it is almost time for the weekly cleaning, and time to order new compact fluorescent bulbs.
  14. You might try "trimming" those patches of algae the hare is missing ... maybe that will entice him to come on over and dine. Also, keep an eye on it after the algae is gone. You don't want it dying from starvation.
  15. Yeah ... I had one that ignored hair algae for ages, then one day he decided to go to town on the stuff! A tiger turbo I got the RCA is still trying to decide He finally made it on to the rocks checking for something better to eat.

Using the Marine Depot refrac here and loving it! (I think it was around $30-40)
  17. Here is my entry. Hard to pick a favorite shot...
  18. I have also had hit-and-miss luck with using turbo snails to control hair algae. (Sorry don't have a sea hare to lend out ... saw some on Monday at RCA).
  19. Just a reminder ... not sure what the tank is like, but copper can not be used in tanks with any invertebrates... it will kill them.
  20. Sounds like saltwater "Ich". Normally brought on by stress to the fish. It has been a while since I have dealt with this, so hopefully someone else will jump in too. If I remember correctly, elevating the tank temperature will help speed up the life/death of the disease. There are also commercial medications that will help.
  21. Last time I checked my tap water here in Buda (community well .. back in March 2007) it had a TDS of 278. Since I only have a 24g salt and a 16 gallon fresh, I have my own RODI unit.
  22. I'd say we have a clear winner ... congrats to GKarshens! It was nice being the runner up
  23. Very cool tank. Definitely post a picture once everything is open. Welcome to Austin!
