There is an acceptable voltage/amperage range, and I would recommend trying to get on the low side if you want quiet. Mine pumps fast but has a pretty high pitched whine.
just a heads up, I've seen several threads about this FW jacking up the apex (locking up, etc). Probably best to steer clear until they get the issues ironed out.
Ah OK, i see what you're saying, and I agree with you. I treated some of my first SPS TERRIBLY, and they didnt die. They also didnt really grow. Now that I dose, my growth is very good, but seems more susceptible to getting pissy.
I havent, but they have a canister built specifically for BPs. You'd probably get better tumble with a purpose built reactor, but as an entry level piece it would probably do OK.
I believe mine was alk related. I tend to run on the low side of the alk scale (and some believe that the Hanna alk meter reads low), and I left my doser on program mode instead of dose mode for a few days. The combination of my alk consumption increasing via increased SPS mass with my dosers non-functioning put me in a very precipitious range. This was combined with a GFO swap which i believe really tanked the alk, leading to the RTN of 2 colonies that I've had for some time now. One seems to be doing OK, the other looks like its going to perish.
Your LPS will love you long time if you get that alk up a bit higher (i noticed positive LPS changes (polyp "fatness")) when i keep my alk in the 8 range (+/-0.5).
Worked great in my old house, when I moved it worked for a while, but overtime the voltage thieving that it has to do to charge it's batteries was preventing the outdoor AC unit from functioning properly. Sold it I use a z-wave thermostat controllable via my security system (and iOS), but it doesnt have the scheduling and data tracking that the nest did. If they every made a new version, I'd take it back in a heartbeat.
To give the less vocal minority a voice, here is the most recent tank of the month on Reef Central.
