I used live rock in mine but I know people use dry and cycle it. Mine is totally on auto pilot, definitely my easiest tank. Literally all I do is a small water change once a week (or so ) and top off when needed. I have a dendro in there that is nps, so I give it a couple pellets once in a while. I don't have any fish though, so that would certainly increase maintenance.

    Thanks it's a small dendro.
  4. Not much has changed since I added the corals. I'm seeing growth everywhere except maybe the birdsnest. It's still putting out it's polyps but has lost most of the green color. These pictures were taken tonight after the light had already been off a while, so that's why most of the corals are closed up. I had removed a small rock that was growing all sorts of algae that the hermit wouldn't eat, and that lead to a small avalanche that messed up the part where the leptoastrea was sitting. It's on the sandbed for now and when I get a chance I'll try to get it back up on the big rock pile. I'm still considering adding a small fish, but not sure what yet. That would be the last addition as I've pretty much used up my budget coral-wise It's been nice to just sit back and let it grow out! The dendro has really recovered well! It's almost always out.

    Plumbing help

Are the holes 1" wide or are you using 1" bulkheads? For instance for a 3/4" bulk head I used I needed to make a make 1.33" in diameter. Assuming your using a threaded bulkhead you will need: MPT adapter + pipe + elbow (slip x thread) + loc-line MPT connection + loc-line. You can add a nozzle to the loc-line or not and just point it in the direction you want the flow. Also don't forget to drill a siphon break in the bottom corner of the elbow.I hope this helps Yes it does thanks. The holes are 1"and I have threaded bulkheads.

Thank you so much for the picture! That's exactly what I needed to see. So it's okay for the return pipe to be skinnier than the drain?

    Plumbing help

Yes, of course. Shows how much I don't know! There are 2 1"holes at the bottom of a single overflow box. I have the bulkheads and was planning on getting the parts to build the durso overflow and return. Only the parts in the tank. I'm not ready to figure out the underneath part yet. I'm working with bio3 on the sump, so when that happens I'll get the underneath done. I have a parts list for the durso but am completely clueless on the return part. I don't have any loc-line yet, isn't that just the part at the top where you can aim how the water comes out?
  13. I'm planning on building a durso standpipe to get water from the display to sump, but can't find any info on how to get water from the return pump up to display, the part that's inside the overflow box attaching to the bulkhead. Is it just a piece of pvc with loc-line attached?

    BRS group buy
It probably won't be until next week. I am ordering a Neptune Apex and it's currently not in stock (they said it should be available next week). Get pumped saltwater also sells apex and gives a 10 percent discount to club members...
  15. Tonight I got the doors hung. Earlier I had also replaced the outlet behind the tank with a gfci outlet and waterproof cover.
  16. I was there, wearing a black ARC t shirt and a newborn
  17. Wow! That's stunning!
  18. Here is a picture of the painted stand minus the doors which I still need to attach.

19.

It's mostly .5" birch ply and a piece or 2 of .5" pine. It was harder than I thought to find the birch but it sure looks better than the pine! With the paint though it doesn't seem to matter.
Well, the grain pattern can make a big difference, with stain or paint. Birch, maple or poplar are all great hardwoods to use with paint, they have a tighter grain patterns and take paint very well. Pine has a much wider grain and is more "rustic" looking when finished. Of the listed hardwoods, birch is I think the easiest to find here in Texas. Home Depot caries plywood sheets of it.

If you are going to stain the woods, these woods will work as well, but cherry, walnut, mahogany, etc. are more commonly used.... just my 2 cents... if it's even worth that.

I painted the stand, I didn't use stain. And yes, there is a noticeable difference in the grain between the birch and pine. I spent too much time sanding the pine because of this....if it was easier for me to cut the pieces I would've replaced the pine with birch. It's only pine on the sides though. McCoys has birch in huge sheets only and they won't cut for you. Lowe's only carries maple and pine, and I did finally get the birch at HD. Btw..the pine was not what SChrisEV suggested I use He recommended the birch and it is definitely better!
